New footage exclusively obtained by The New York Times showed the aftermath of the moment a giant glacier broke away from the top of a ridge in the Himalayas, setting off a deluge of mud, snow, floodwaters and debris to the valley communities below.

The rapid landslide of ice and rock and flash floods that killed hundreds in Nepal and China's Tibet were triggered when the lower part of a glacier broke off and crashed on to the valley floor hundreds of metres below.
